Student: | Hi, you’re the Janitor, right? Can you help me? |
Janitor: | I am indeed the janitor. I would like to be able to help; it depends on what you need. |
Student: | There’s just not room for all my stuff in my dorm. Can you suggest what to do with it? |
Janitor: | Well….I could assist you with taking it to a donation center or to the trash. |
Student: | Mmm, that’s not really what I meant. Doesn’t the school have some sort of area for extra furniture and things? I could just put my stuff in the basement? |
Janitor: | Students aren’t allowed to simply dump their stuff in the basement. |
Student: | But why not? |
Janitor: | It’s a university policy. |
Student: | Are you sure? I mean, come on, can’t you just pretend you didn’t see anything and I’ll just take stuff down? |
Janitor: | I am sorry, but I can’t just make exceptions to the university policy. |
Student: | Could you tell me about the policy so I at least understand? |
Janitor: | First, I would need to gain approval from the school. I don’t have the authority to do these things on my own, these decisions have to go through my superiors first. And then every piece of furniture needs to be assigned a number to keep track of what belongs to whom and this costs money. |
Student: | Huh….I didn’t think it would be that complicated. I mean, I would know it’s my stuff. |
Janitor: | Yes, but without a system in place any student could walk in and claim it as theirs. |
Student: | I wouldn’t want that… |
Janitor: | Besides, the second reason is that there is a safety concern. The university is very committed to the safety of each and every student. |
Student: | I definitely didn’t think about that. |
Janitor: | Have you thought perhaps about selling some of your extra stuff? |
Student: | What? |
Janitor: | It’s something to think about. If you were going to just dump it in the basement, then you’re clearly not using it. You might as well sell it to make a bit of extra cash and then have more space. |
Student: | I guess that makes sense…it’s just counterintuitive that we can’t use the space when it’s there. |
Janitor: | Sometimes, you just have to deal with the way things are. Besides, like I said, selling is a good option to consider. A lot of students regret having so much stuff, especially when it’s time to move out. You’ll thank yourself for getting rid of it now and not hanging on to it. |
Student: | Yeah, I could use the extra cash. And since it doesn’t fit now, who knows whether or not it’ll fit in the future. Hey, you ended up helping after all. |
Janitor: | Well, I’m very glad I could help, even if it’s in a different way. Good luck with everything. |
Student. | Yeah. Bye. |
