4. Function Questions

まずは、Function Questionsを実際に解いてみて、どのような問題傾向か確認していきましょう：

Why does the professor prompt the student in this way?
A. He wants to determine what she does and does not understand.
B. He is trying to get her to start arriving at answers on her own so she’ll be able to better complete the assignment.
C. He wants to know if she was paying attention in class whatsoever when he described the assignment.
D. All of the above are likely motivations.

Student:	Hi, professor.
Professor:	Hello, Linda. Do you have a question?
Student:	Yeah, I don’t really understand this assignment.
Professor:	The one about the language of the poem?
Student:	Uh-huh….
Professor:	Okay. What don’t you understand about it?
Student:	Kind of…everything.
Professor:	Alright, so first, tell me what you think the assignment is asking you to do.
Student:	I think…it probably wants me to figure out like…what the words mean and stuff, and how the language gives this poem meaning?
Professor:	Good, that’s quite right.

Function Questions は上記のように、該当部分の音声をもう一度聴いてその意図を答えます。

音声の一部を再度聴くことができるので、リスニング中は特に表現などをメモする必要はありません。他の問題と同じように、全体の流れを見ながらその表現の意図を推測していきます。

設問は以下の形式で出題されます：

直接的な表現ではなく、その表現の裏に隠れた「意図」や「思惑」などを推測していきます。

例えば今回の例をみると、

Alright, so first, tell me what you think the assignment is asking you to do.
「では、まず初めに、課題で求められていたと思うことを教えてください」

とあります。

仮にこの表現を直接的に解釈すると「この教授は課題の内容を知りたい（だから質問している）」となります。しかし、実際はそうではないですよね。

設問にあるように「なぜ、教授は質問しているのか？」という「意図」の部分に焦点を当てて回答しましょう。

このような「意図」は、話の状況に応じて役割が異なるので、全体の流れを考慮して回答すると正答率を上げることができます。
