4. Inference Questions
まずは、実際のInference Questionsが、どのような問題形式か取り組んでみましょう：

At least the wealthy classes had time for leisure; the lower classes became a reliable source of labor. Within this organized system with an abundance of food resources, a rich culture flourished. While the pyramids and the elaborate tombs of the pharaohs are the most well-known manifestation of this culture, there are countless other achievements, including calendars, a form of writing, sophisticated architecture (particularly of temples), and a complex belief system including a pantheon of gods.

Inference Questions の解き方
Inference Questions は、パッセージで直接言及されていない情報を推測して回答する問題です。
設問でパッセージが指定されている場合は、指定されたパッセージのみを読解することで回答可能です。回答方法は以下の通りです：
- 該当するパッセージの要点を理解する
- 選択肢を精読してパッセージの情報と一つ一つ比較する
- 消去法で回答を導き出す
Inference Questions は、選択肢を正しく読解することがポイントです。基本的には四つの選択肢のうち二つは、パッセージと異なる内容や因果関係で述べられているため、二つの選択肢を比較しながらより適切な方を残します。
今回のサンプル問題を見てみると、
- B. It began in the lower classes and percolated up to the higher classes.
「下級階層で始まり上流階級まで浸透した」 - D. It is delayed when people spend too much time on leisure activities.
「余暇に時間を使いすぎたことで遅れる」
とあります。
本文を見てみると、
- At least the wealthy classes had time for leisure; the lower classes became a reliable source of labor.（第二センテンス）
「上流階級は余暇があった。下級階級は労働の資源となった」 - … there are countless other achievements, ~（第三センテンス）
「数え切れないほど得たものがあった」
とあるので、パッセージの内容と逆のことを言っていることが分かります。
Aは「季節」に関することはパッセージで言及されていないので、無関係な情報ということが分かります。Cは、冒頭で “…, along with advances in food storage, ~” と述べていることから「食料不足が解消されたこと＝stability in food resources（食料の維持）」と同じことが書かれているので C が正解ということが分かります。
必ずしも全て消去法で導く必要はありませんが、リーディングで27点以上を目指す場合は全ての選択肢に目を通しておくことでスコアミスの確率を減らすことができます。

- 選択肢を精読することが一番のポイント
- 四つある選択肢のうち二つは本文と反対のことを述べているケースが多い
- 高スコアを目指す場合は、全ての選択肢に目を通しておくと良い
