The Nature Of Astronomy
Astronomy is defined as the study of the objects that lie beyond our planet Earth and the processes by which these objects interact with one another. We will see, though, that it is much more. Rhetorical Purpose Questionsは、書き手が「何故この一文を書いたか」という意図を問う問題です。

一つのパッセージに最低一問から二問出題される割合が多いです。

上記のような質問形式をみたら質問を正しく理解し、該当するパッセージに目を通しましょう。

Rhetorical Purpose Questionsを解くときのポイントは「該当する段落で筆者が伝えたいことは何か？」という段落の要点をしっかりと理解することです。

段落にはそれぞれ役割があり、各段落に筆者が伝えたいメッセージが必ず一つ含まれます。そのメッセージに説得力を出すために、似たような具体的な事例を挙げたり、過去の情報を説明したりするのです。

つまり、段落全体を通して伝えたいメッセージを理解することが非常に大切になります。段落の要点を理解した上で、前の文章等の因果関係を読み解いていきます。

今回のサンプル問題を見てみると、

In considering the history of the universe, we will see again and again that the cosmos evolves; it changes in profound ways over long periods of time.
「宇宙の歴史を考えると、私たちは宇宙の進化を何度も目にしている。宇宙は長い時間をかけて大きく変化している」

と書かれてあります。

上記の文章の後に例文が続いていることがわかるので、「宇宙が長い時間をかけて変化した」という主張の具体的な根拠を示すために文章を挿入したことが分かります。

ここまで把握できた段階で、選択肢を一つ一つ比較して消去法で答えを導きます。
