Independent Writing – ① 導入の書き方
エッセイの導入部分は、基本的に以下の3つのセンテンスで構成します。
- 設問のパラフレーズ
- Thesis Statement（主題）
- ボディへの展開（必要あれば）
まず初めに設問で述べられているトピックを、違う語句や表現で置き換えて問題提起をおこないます。
これをパラフレーズと言い、ライティングで高スコアを取るために必要なテクニックなので覚えておきましょう。
次にトピックに対する自分の意見やスタンスを明記します。この時に曖昧な表現はせずに、自分の立場をビシッと述べることを意識します。
最後に、ボディに続くためのセンテンスを挿入します。これは無理に挿入する必要はありませんので、文字数がギリギリだったりする場合など緊急時に使うと良いでしょう。
設問のパラフレーズ
例えば、以下のような設問が出題されたとします。
- Some students prefer to study alone. Others prefer to study with a group of students. Which do you prefer?
- Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
上記をパラフレーズすると以下のように置き換えることができます。
- Some students prefer to study in a group and enjoy the enthusiastic atmosphere while other students are in favor of studying alone in a quiet place.
パラフレーズに正解は一つではありません。そのため、正しい英語にとらわれず同じ表現でも「違う言い方がないか？」と常に自問しておくことが大切です。
また、ライティングの解答例などを参考にして、使えそうな表現をストックしておいてもいいでしょう。
参考までに、設問のパラフレーズに役立つ表現を以下にまとめたので使ったことのない表現があれば使ってみてください。

Thesis Statement（主題）
パラフレーズに続けて、自分の主張を述べていきます。
- In my opinion, studying by myself is better than studying in a group because…
ポイントは主張の立場を明確にすることです。
そして、実際の考えがどうであれ一度決めたスタンスは崩さずに主張を展開していきます。
また、Thesis Statementのレベルを一段階高めるテクニックとして「譲歩」の表現を加えて見ることをオススメします。
例えば、
- Although some enjoy the enthusiastic atmosphere in a group, I feel that studying alone is best for students.
のように、あえて自分の主張に対する反論を述べておくことで、よりThesis Statementを強化することができます。（文字数を稼ぐこともできます）

最後に必要があれば、ボディへの展開を述べていきます。
表現はいずれのトピックでも使用することができるので、参考までに以下のセンテンスを覚えておきましょう。
- ・In this essay, I will address three potential problems with…
- ・I feel this way for ………. reasons, which I will explore in the following essay.
