Teacher: | Luke, do you have time for a quick conversation? |
Student: | Yeah, sure. What’s up? |
Teacher: | I was just hoping to hear how the party went last night. |
Student: | Oh… yeah. It was fun! We had a good turn out and everybody seemed to have a good time. We really tried to focus on the social aspect and I think that worked out well. |
Teacher: | Wonderful. So you’d call it a success, then? |
Student: | Ummm…mostly. |
Teacher: | Why only mostly? |
Student: | Well, we happened to spend more than the budget… so that’s not so good. |
Teacher: | Mmmm. That’s not good at all. How did that happen? |
Student: | There are a lot of costs associated with a party, ones that most people don’t think of. |
Teacher: | I’m certainly not trying to say there aren’t. But any time something like this happens, it’s important to think through everything and make sure that there wasn’t a mistake made anywhere, especially on part of the businesses. It’s pretty common to get double-charged for items. |
Student: | Ok, that’s a good point. So, we’ll just walk through it all? |
Teacher: | Yes, I think that sounds best. |
Student: | Well, first there’s the caterer and food. |
Teacher: | Okay. |
Student: | Then we had to rent tables and chairs so everyone had a place to eat. |
Teacher: | Yes, that makes sense. |
Student: | We were able to cut entertainment costs by just using another student’s speaker system it hooked up to an iPod with a premade playlist. |
Teacher: | Cutting costs are always good. I don’t see yet how this would have sent you over the designated funds. |
Student: | Yeah…. I’m not sure. I mean, no extra or unexpected purchases came up. |
Teacher: | What about decorations? |
Student: | We spent a bit of money on that, but not much, because we had a team that mostly made stuff or put stuff together from pretty cheap parts. |
Teacher: | Did you save all of the receipts? |
Student: | Yeah, I had them sent by email so I couldn’t lose them or anything. |
Teacher: | Okay, let’s consult those quickly, then. Do you still have time? |
Student: | Yeah, my next class doesn’t start for an hour or so. |
Teacher: | Alright. Best to get this sorted out now, but I wouldn’t want to impose on your schedule. |
Student: | It’s all good. So let’s see….. the receipt for the rental equipment looks good, decoration supplies are fine…. Oh here it is! The caterer forgot to get us the discount we’d agreed on. |
Teacher: | Okay, so if you apply the discount, will you be back within the budget? |
Student: | Yeah! Okay, great. Now that we found it, this will be easy. I’ll just call the caterer again or go in and get them to change it so we’ll be credited back some money. |
Teacher: | Good work, Luke. I’m glad we’ve got this all figured out. Now the party can be a success overall. |
Student: | Yup, and then the committee doesn’t have to be mad about our spending, which should help for future parties. |
Teacher: | Indeed. So, just get to talking with the caterer before you forget! |
Student: | I’ll go do that now. Bye! |
