Student: | Hi professor, I wanted to talk to you because I’d like to go to the Opera show this weekend. |
Professor: | Oh, Sarah, I’m sorry to say that you won’t be able to attend. I don’t have any tickets left. |
Student: | Really? Because I really want to go. |
Professor: | Unfortunately, tickets are only available for students taking the art history class. |
Student: | I took that class last semester! Can’t that qualify me? |
Professor: | I am sorry, Sarah, but you have to be a current student. It’s an unfortunate situation, I know. |
Student: | Come on. There’s gotta be some way I can see the Opera. |
Professor: | Well, there is a possibility… you could ask the theater if there are any opening volunteer positions so that you could end up watching the show for free. |
Student: | But then I’d have to do the volunteer work, huh? It’s not fair, you know. There’s no good reason that the other students get to see this and that I don’t. |
Professor: | I am sorry you feel that way. We reserve these tickets for the current art history students because the show corresponds to their classwork nicely and serves as an enhancement to their education. |
Student: | Where’s the enhancement to my education? I still have things I can learn by going to the show. |
Professor: | You would learn things by working as a volunteer as well. |
Student: | What? |
Professor: | Absolutely. You shouldn’t overlook the experience that volunteer work provides you. I’m sure you would get an inside look as to how the theater runs its operations. |
Student: | But I’d probably be stuck selling concessions at their shows or something. |
Professor: | It might be that you start there, but if you continue to volunteer for the theater, you would be able to continue to see a variety of shows for free and potentially do other work for them. You can’t expect to learn everything at once; often you have to put a bit of hard work in first. |
Student: | It’s just frustrating. |
Professor: | I know. Sometimes timing doesn’t work out well, or things look like they’re not working out well, but you never know what kind of opportunity this might present for you. None of the other students are even considering a volunteer position. And if nothing else, it will be something you can put on your resume. |
Student: | Hmmm, I haven’t thought about my resume too much yet. |
Professor: | That’s okay. You don’t want to be overly worried about it, but it is something to keep in mind. Plus, this is all just about you seeing the opera right? If you really want to see it, then you’ll just have to do what’s necessary. |
Student: | Yeah, okay. And maybe it’ll even be fun, the volunteering. But either way, I’m gonna see that show! |
