Student: | Excuse me, could I ask you for a favour really quick? |
Custodian: | Sure. What can I help you with? |
Student: | Well, I’ve got this sculpture that I need to decorate, so I was hoping you might be able to give me some unused light bulbs, tree twigs, and plasters. |
Custodian: | That’s a pretty strange request! What do you need all that stuff for? Can’t just go around handing things out to anybody who asks. |
Student: | I’m head of the drama club, and so part of that means that I have to prepare the props for next month. |
Custodian: | And so…these light bulbs, twigs, and plasters are going to be used for some props? |
Student: | Yeah. The sculpture is really bare right now and this stuff will make it more interesting. |
Custodian: | I didn’t think props mattered all that much. I mean, isn’t it more about the actors? |
Student: | It’s funny you say that, actually, because a lot of people don’t realize how important props are. The production really relies on this sculpture. |
Custodian: | Huh…I wouldn’t have guessed. |
Student: | It’s okay. I just take this stuff pretty seriously and I want to do a great job so that more people will join the club, even if other people aren’t aware or don’t quite notice. |
Custodian: | But you said it does matter. |
Student: | Well, it does, but sometimes it’s in that way that people aren’t actively aware of. Having it there, makes things better and not having it there makes things worse, but people don’t realize that that’s the reason why. |
Custodian: | Okay. So it’s a really important statue. Got it. |
Student: | It is. And this time, it’s about more than just putting on a good show. I’m really trying to impress students so more will join the club. |
Custodian: | It sounds like you’ve got a lot of work ahead of you. |
Student: | Yeah I guess so. Drama is really my passion though, so it doesn’t feel too much like work. |
Custodian: | Well, you’ve certainly got a good attitude about all this. |
Student: | Thanks. So, will you help me? |
Custodian: | I don’t see how I couldn’t, at this point. Hard work deserves reward. I would be glad to help out. |
Student: | Thank you! If it’s not pushing my luck too far, maybe you could even help me with decorating the sculpture? |
Custodian: | I don’t see why not. Since next week is Christmas, there will be a lot of twigs available that we can use. So I can help you out next week if that works for you. |
Student: | Next week…..sure! I’ve got a bit of time and do want to make sure that we have all the things we need. |
Custodian: | Okay. We’ll work on it then and hopefully everything will turn out for you. |
Student: | Yeah. Thank you so much. I feel good about this! |
