Student: | Hi, teacher, do you have some time to talk? |
Teacher: | Sure, Nick. |
Student: | Okay….so my roommate, he does all this stuff. Like he’s got goals and things, you know? And I’ve been thinking that I should try to be a bit more like him and set goals for myself. And I was thinking that I could do that by taking more courses to learn more new things, but I really don’t know what sort of courses I could take…..so that’s where you come in! Hopefully, I mean, if you have any ideas. Sorry, I’m rambling. |
Teacher: | Don’t worry about it. So if I understand correctly, you just want some suggestions on how to learn new things, right? |
Student: | Yeah, that just about does it! |
Teacher: | Okay, have you considered the learning opportunities outside of class? |
Student: | What do you mean? |
Teacher: | Well, University is not only a great place for academic knowledge, but also a place where you can develop many other skills. |
Student: | Other skills….. like leadership? |
Teacher: | Absolutely. You can also develop skills such as team work, self-motivation, and all sorts of things. |
Student: | Okay… yeah, that does sound like stuff that my roommate’s got going for him, so I want to be a part of that kind of stuff too. |
Teacher: | I think it’s a good idea. These kinds of opportunities really help round out academic learning. |
Student: | I like it. How would I go about those? |
Teacher: | Well, you can take some collaboration courses that require students to work together as a team. |
Student: | Okay, great. I’ll look into those more. Are there other courses that would offer these kinds of things? |
Teacher: | There are always physical education courses. We have a big variety of them so there should be something that appeals to you. |
Student: | Oh…I haven’t done anything like sports in a while, that could be really good! |
Teacher: | A lot of people actually learn to play sports in university without any prior experience. This can become a big part of their life in an unexpected but nice way, plus it promotes fitness and good health. |
Student: | Yeah, I like the sound of that. Plus, my roommate does play basketball, so there’s that! |
Teacher: | It’s nice that your roommate is such a good role model for you. |
Student: | Mhmm. I don’t know that all of this stuff would have occurred to me otherwise. |
Teacher: | Sounds like you should make sure to thank him. You could also try to coordinate a class together so that you go in already having a friend. |
Student: | That’s a good idea…. I think I’ll talk to him about that. And I’ll definitely look more into all those courses you told me about. |
Teacher: | Glad to hear it. Is there anything else? |
Student: | I don’t think so! You’ve been really helpful. Thank you very much. |
Teacher: | Anytime, Nick. Good luck with developing new skills. |
Student: | Thanks. See you tomorrow in class. |
