The officials of the university made an announcement today. They would give 10 million dollars as an investment in the University’s radio station, WXY-2. This money will help the station to extend its programming content and broadcasting area. This means that the station’s recognition in leading radio programming will now be able to add folk music and jazz to its present innovative programming of rock and roll. Furthermore, three adjoining countries in our state will be able to listen to the broadcast besides broadcasting for the university audience because of the new powerful transmitters that will rebroadcast the WXY-2 signal.
Now listen to the conversation below.
Prepare your answer in 30 seconds. Then answer the question below:
- The man expresses his opinion about the radio station’s plans for expansion. State his opinion and explain the reasons he gives for that opinion.
You have 60 seconds to record your answer.

Sample Answer Task 1
If I were given an empty piece of land, it would depend on two situations that dictate how I use the land.
The first situation is if I was having difficulty with my finances. In that situation and for my own well-being, I would use the land to grow the garden and hopefully make a profit from the plants.
The second situation is if I was doing very well financially and could afford building a kid’s playground. In that situation, I would donate my money and build a playground.
Therefore, my decision to either grow a garden or build a kid playground really depends on my financial situation.
Therefore, if I had to choose the most beneficial feature of a smartphone to students, I believe it is listening to music.
Sample Answer Task 2
The student heard the university announcement about the University radio station, WXY-2.
The station is adding folk music and jazz to their programming. It’s also expanding programming to more communities. The student likes this news because there will be more opportunities for interested students to learn about hosting radio programs and also how to be a DJ.
Another reason he likes it is there will be more student work-study positions available to help with technical production because of the added listening communities.
Overall, the student likes that the radio station is expanding in types of music and broadcasting areas. It is good for students. And it will help the listeners from the university and the new listening communities get closer.
Sample Answer – Task 3
Reward theory of attraction is described in the reading passage as the idea that people like others whose behavior is rewarding or whom they have things in common with. The professor demonstrates this idea through two stories as examples.
In the first example, the professor was attracted to and liked his neighbour because they were able to talk about books and baseball, things they were both attracted to.
In another scenario, the professor didn’t like his new neighbor because they shared no interests.
So the reward theory of attraction says that people will be attracted to those with whom they share interests and find rewarding.
Sample Answer – Task 4
In this lecture the professor gives social studies information about role distancing. Role distancing is when a person presents themselves at a distance from the role that they play. There are two cases of role distancing.
The first case is when a person doesn’t get involved in common roles that others are involved in. An easy example is when a person opens their eyes during a religious prayer that requires closed eyes. It means that they disagree with that role or practice and are distancing themselves from it by opening their eyes.
A second case of role distancing is when a person denies their role completely. The example the professor gives is when a person says they are employed when they are actually unemployed. In some cases it is a defensive role a person takes due to their inability to accept the role.

Male: | I just saw the news about the radio station, WXY-2. |
Female: | I didn’t see it. I don’t listen to rock and roll music too often. |
Male: | Well, the station is adding other kinds of music to their programming, like folk music and jazz. |
Female: | That’s great news! I really like jazz piano. |
Male: | Now there will be lots more opportunities for students who are interested in learning about hosting radio programs and also how to be a DJ. |
Female: | Oh, yes, that’s probably so. |
Male: | And there will be more work-study positions for students to help with technical production because the broadcasting is expanding to other communities. |
Female: | But will the “new” non-university audience in the other communities really listen to our station? |
Male: | Certainly. I also think that this plan will help the young people in the new listening areas and the college students feel closer together. And it will really let our communities be close, too. |
Transcript – Task 3
P: | Okay! Last week we talked about how we are attracted to those we find it satisfying and gratifying to be around. If a relationship gives us more reward and pleasure than cost and pain, we will like that relationship and wish it to continue. This is what we call reward theory of attraction. And I want to share with you my own personal experience that can help you better understand the reward theory of attraction. |
I still remember how I met one of my good friends. His name is John. John used to be my neighbour. We lived very close but we never really had a conversation before. One time he invited me to his party. And there, we talked about a lot of things. Like we talked about books and a lot of other things too. Wow! There was a great time that night. We found out we had a lot of things in common. We both loved books and baseball. And after that, we became very good friends.
A couple of years later, I moved to a different place where the neighbour is also a very nice and gentle person, but I always feel unconformable and want to avoid the conversation with my new neighbour. Every time we chatted with each other, I had a little headache because I couldn’t find anything that I am interested in and he is also interested in.
I think this is the reward theory of attraction. I find it satisfying when I am around John because we share the same interest. |

P: | Okay, today let’s spend some time looking at something in social studies called “role distancing.” It’s defined as the act of presenting your “self” as being removed, or distanced from, the role you are being asked to play. Now, there are actually two cases of role distancing. |
The first case is a person who chooses not to participate in a common role others are involved in. This is usually because of the high commitment and involvement required by the role. For example, many religions require that you close your eyes when you’re praying. Refusing to do that is a sign that you disagree with that particular role. Another example is, most schools have assemblies every day. During these assemblies, they might ask students to participate; to perform a role of some kind. Some students may choose to distance themselves from these roles by deliberately being late for school. Make sense?
Okay! The second case of role distancing is to deny that role completely. For example, an unemployed person may insist that they are different from other unemployed people in some way. They may even say that they are employed when they’re not. So in this case or in similar scenarios, role-distancing is often a defensive strategy that may be associated with poor well-being. The cause of this is the individual’s inability to accept that role. |
