発音応用08. 音声変化 [t, d, s, z] + [j]
1. [You] の前で変化する音
“Nice to meet you” と発音する時に「ナイストゥーミーチュー」と言うのと同じように、[t, d, s, z] の音に [j] が続くと音声変化が起こります。
発音記号に直してみると [mi:t] [ ju] と独立して発音せずに、[mi:tʃu] と単語が繋がって違う発音記号に変化していることが分かります。
このように語末の [t, d, s, z] の後に [j] が連続すると、[tʃ, dʒ, ʃ, ʒ] という一つの音に変化する規則があります。
この変化は単語にまたがって起こり、1単語のなかでは起こりません。
例えば “courtyard” では [koːtjaːd] のままで [koːtʃaːd] とは発音しません。
基本的には “you” を使用する時に音声変化が起こるケースが多いので、”you” を使用する時にはその前の音を意識して発音してみると良いでしょう。
それではまずは、音声変化が起きる場合とそうでない場合の音を聴き比べてみましょう:
- Nice to meet–you.
- I need–your help.
- I miss–you.
- Close–your eyes.
かしこまったスピーチなどでは、あえて音声変化を起こさず1単語ごとはっきりと発音する傾向がありますが、基本的には音声変化を伴って発音することが一般的です。
練習課題
以下の例文を聴いて、音源の音声変化を真似して発音してみましょう:
- Where did you–get–your new bike?
- I met–your brother at–your mother’s party.
- You’ll be glad–you didn’t eat–yet.
- I bet–you didn’t think I’d graduate this–year.
- Are those–your dogs over there in Matt’s–yard?
- Didn’t–you know that he‘s–your new teacher?
- He said he loves–you and wants to kiss–you.
- Hw wasted his–youth by drinking too much in those–years.
- I got–your email about–your problem.
- Why didn’t–you let–your girlfriend read–your story?
