Student: Hi…this is the enrollment center, right?
Staff: It certainly is. Come on in.
Student: Thanks…
Staff: So, what is it I can help you with today?
Student: I really want to register for Professor Taylor’s chemistry course on Monday mornings.
Staff: Okay…..just one second…. Alright, so for that class you will have to be on a waiting list.
Student: Wow, really? Why?
Staff: This course is a very special one, differing from all of the other chemistry courses. It requires students to participate in a lab, and the lab seats are limited. That’s why this course is already full.
Student: Oh….geez, well I didn’t know that.
Staff: You’re not the first student to come see me about this, actually. A lot of students have the same problem.
Student: Well, I could do the same class just on Thursday mornings instead, so can I just sign up for that one so I don’t have to deal with the waiting list?
Staff: Unfortunately, the schedule has been changed and the class taking place on Thursday mornings is now taking place on Friday morning instead. Would you still like to sign up for it?
Student: Oh my gosh, that’s ridiculous! Nobody wants to take a class on Friday morning. How can they just change the schedule like that? It should be set on the first day of the semester.
Staff: Some professors change the course schedule within the first and second weeks, before the course is full. Students are advised to check the online schedule every day to be up to date.
Student: That’s such a nuisance.
Staff: I am sorry you feel that way. You can, of course, still go on the waiting list for the Monday course.
Student: It’s got that lab component, right? Does that make the class a bunch harder?
Staff: It depends. Some students struggle with the lab, but it does provide a unique opportunity for hands on learning, which most students find very valuable.
Student: Hmm….I do usually learn better that way.
Staff: Well, then. I think it is a good idea to put you on the waiting list. At the very least, it can’t hurt.
Student: Okay…plus, I just really don’t want to have to take that class on a Friday, and I do need that class, so I guess I’m a bit stuck.
Staff: We’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed that you make it into the Monday section, then.
Student: Yeah, sounds like it.
Staff: Was there anything else I can help you with?
Student: No….I guess not. Thanks.
Staff: Anytime. Have a great day!
