Officer: Good afternoon, how can I help you today?
Student: Hi. Yeah…um. I wanted to join the music club. This is where I do that, right?
Officer: This is the recreation center, so you do sign up for clubs, yes. The music club, however, is very difficult to get into.
Student: Really? I thought anyone could join a club if they just wanted to?
Officer: Unfortunately, certain clubs don’t have the ability to sustain an unlimited number of members.
Student: Hmmm….
Officer: If you think about it though, it makes sense. The music club often hosts many free musical events for all their members, and so if they let just anyone in, they would have a much harder time with those events.
Student: Okay. That does make sense. So…it’s difficult to get in, but it’s worth it because they offer a lot of stuff.
Officer: Yes.
Student: Do you know what kinds of events they host?
Officer: I am aware of some. Just last week, they hosted a jazz concert.
Student: Okay, nice. I like jazz a lot. So, you said it’s hard to get in, but I mean, just how tough is it?
Officer: Well, there are a lot of students already signed up on the waiting list.
Student: Darn.
Officer: I certainly don’t want to dissuade you.
Student: Do I even really have a chance, though?
Officer: Absolutely. Besides, I was about to tell you that aside from filling out the application form, you’ll also write a cover letter that explains why you want to join the club.
Student: Oh…..I’ve never written a cover letter before.
Officer: There are plenty of resources on campus to help you with that.
Student: Really? That’s good, because it sounds like that’s my best bet for getting in…
Officer: Cover letters are very important. It gives you the opportunity to introduce yourself and essentially convince others why they should let you in to the club. They work the same way for jobs, so it’s actually very good for you to get this experience now.
Student: That’s kind of a lot of pressure.
Officer: It can be, so try not to be too worried about it. You just want to represent yourself the best way you can. Show them who you are.
Student: Okay. It’s not so bad when you put it that way.
Officer: Good. It shouldn’t be something you worry too much about.
Student: Yeah….it’s a bit rough that I can’t just join the club, but I really want to, so I’ll try hard.
Officer: Great…and remember that there are lots of resources, so you don’t have to figure this out all on your own.
Student: Thanks…yeah, I’ll probably look into that.
Officer: Wonderful. Well then, I wish you luck.
Student: Fingers crossed! Thanks again, and have a good day!
Officer: You too.
